UPDATE: Two settlers harassments in one week

settembre 23, 2015 at 4:15 pm

On the third week of Semptember settlers from Ma’on and the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on injuried and harassed Palestinians.
In the afternoon of Semptember 16, in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani, an Israeli settler from the near settlement of Ma’on harassed a twelve years old palestinian sheperd while he was grazing his flock in a palestinian owned land not far from the settlement.
The settler was walking by the street behind the fence dividing Ma’on from the Palestinian owned land. Noticing the palestinian sheperd, the settler started injuring him in hebrew. In addition he showed up a  palestinian flag, using it in an offensive way and throwed it on the ground several times before leaving the place.
Three days later, on the September 19 afternoon, eleven settlers, all minors from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on harassed a Palestinian man who was returning home in Maghaiyr Al Abeed, a small village near At-Tuwani. The settlers blocked the road standing in the middle of it. For this reason, the Palestinian had to take a long road to return home and avoid the risk of being attacked.  Once the interational volounteers reached the place the settlers slowly returned to Havat Ma’on.

UPDATE: Together at school to stop violence

settembre 16, 2015 at 1:52 pm

In the mornings of September 13th and 15th 2015, in the school of At-Tuwani the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee organized some activities that involved students of every class and most of their moms. The initiative was called: “At-Tuwani school volunteers for the end of violence”.
Boys and girls took part in three kinds of workshops. The first, called “My school is my home”, consisted in transforming the ordinary chemistry and physics laboratory into a kitchen. Moms and children prepared some traditional sweets as balouza or the typical Palestinian bread, the sajj, with olive oil and zaatar. One of the most committed women of the village jokes with a bread in her hands and says in front of the camera: “Here’s the Palestinian heritage and civilization! ”
In the second activity, “My mother read me a story. My mother is my friend “, a mother read a story to the younger children, before letting them draw freely.
Finally, the last day, boys and girls of At-Tuwani learned how to use a video camera.

On September 2, in the morning, Israeli District Coordination Office (DCO) and soldiers broke into the school of Shaab al-Butum, a Palestinian village situated in the South Hebron Hills.
DCO and soldiers irrupted into the backyard of the school and delivered stop work order for all the structure, including the fences. Therefore, they intimidated the children and interrupted the lessons.
The school is a brand-new structure that was inaugurated just last week. It encompasses the first six classes and receives thirty-two children coming from Shaab al-Butum and the surrounding villages. Without this school, the children would have to go to the further village of At-Tuwani or to the cities of Al-Birkeh and Yatta to attend classes.

agosto 30, 2015 at 10:56 am

It is summer, time of holiday. Even in the South Hebron Hills the desire of the sea fills people’s minds. On August 28 in a hot morning, around 40 people, all women and children, left the village of At-Tuwani in the direction of the sea. A hardly reachable destination, because for Palestinians the freedom of movement is still a goal to achieve. At the checkpoint to enter Israel, women and children underwent long and humiliating inspections.
Rashid, 9 years old, has been questioned alone, without the presence of his mother. The woman could not manage the situation and the chance to reach the sea has been denied to her and her child.
Despite this unpleasant fact, the women did not lose their good mood. Most of them haven’t had the chance to see the sea, but this time, despite the oppression of the Israeli occupation, they could enjoy a cheerful day.

The villagers are, yet again, facing imminent expulsion from their homes and caves.

On June 13, in At Tuwani village, women and men from South Hebron Hills Popular Committee commemorated Rachel Corrie, Vittorio Arrigoni, Tom Hurndall and Angleo Frammartino, who lost their life in Palestine.

Placing a commemorative plaque near At Tuwani clinic, Palestinians also wanted to underline the importance of international presence and their support for the nonviolent popular resistance: a joint struggle carried on by Palestinians, internationals and Israeli peace activists.

1

During the opening of the commemoration, the mayor of At Tuwani village, the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee, the representative of woman of the area, Abu Qpeita, Luisa Morgantini and international groups spoke and declared their solidarity with the families of the victims.

Cindy and Craig Corrie (parents of Rachel Corrie in skype connection with the event), remarked their solidarity with the daily life resistance of the Palestinians.

6As Kifah Adara, representative for the South Hebron Hills woman, said “Because we know the feelings of the victims’ mothers, our message for them is that we share with them this suffering and this feelings, because we are mother too. We are also here to remember the people that have been injured, or who are denied to enter in the country because of their involvement and activism. This action is the lowest that we can give back to them and to their families. We also don’t want to forget the role of internationals in increasing steadfastness and local daily resistance in this area. (…) our message to the occupation is that we do not want to stay in the valleys, we want to climb the top of the mountains”.

After the speeches, the people moved on Khelly hill, in order to open the Freedom Garden, planting olives trees.

UPDATE : military trainings damaged Palestinian harvest in Jinba, South Hebron Hills.

maggio 29, 2015 at 6:05 pm

foto4

On May 14, an Israeli military training took place on a Palestinian- owned fields, near to the Palestinian Village of Jinba, on Masafer Yatta, in Firing Zone 918.

During the training, Palestinian inhabitants suffered destruction of their owned fields and a restriction on freedom of movement. A part of their cultivated fields were damaged by military activities and the shepherds had to herd their flock in a limited area. Because of this, Palestinians suffered the consequences of a loss in their familiar economy.

foto2

According to the international law, Israeli Army violated the rights of the population of the occupied territory:

– Article 46 of Huauge Declaration states that the private property must be respected and can’t be confiscated;

– Article 53 of IVth Geneva Convention asserts that the destruction of private property is forbidden except where it “is rendered absolutely necessary by military operation”. This necessity clearly refers to combat situation. So a military training cannot be justified because it does not constituted a military need and for that reason the destruction of the fields is unlawful.

-Art. 46 della Convenzione dell’Aia, dichiara che la proprietà privata deve essere rispettata e non può essere confiscata;

On February 11, in the morning, Israeli soldiers and police arrested one man on the bypass road (317) near the village of Tuwani in the South Hebron Hills, and then raided the nearby village of Jawwaya. The man who was arrested had obvious signs of violence, including blood and a scratch on his face, and was probably injured during the arrest. While this man was arrested on the road, Israeli army and police raided Jawayya, where they damaged a tent used by villagers for the storage of livestock food. The soldiers slashed the walls of the tent, probably with a knife.

Around 7:30 am, a family from Jawayya called international volunteers and told them that there were soldiers in Jawayya village. As the volunteers were walking to Jawwaya on the bypass road (317) they saw a police vehicle next to two other cars, which had damaged wheels and flat tires. When the volunteers arrived at the vehicles they saw one man on the ground near one of the vehicles at the side of the road. He was blindfolded and handcuffed with his hands behind his back, and he appeared to have been beaten on the face and mouth. The soldiers loaded the man into one of the vehicles with damaged tires and the soldiers then drove all of the vehicles away.

At around 8:20 am, two international volunteers arrived in the village of Jawwaya, where Israeli soldiers and police were searching houses and tents, probably looking for another man. One of the soldiers attacked one of the volunteers, and then attempted to steal a camera from another. According to Palestinian witnesses, soldiers and police slashed large holes in a tent used as a shelter for the food for the animals and they fired shots into the sky in order to intimidate the inhabitants of the village. At about 8:45 am the soldiers and police left Jawwaya.
