At-Tuwani – South Hebron Hills, West Bank
On February 6, in the morning, Israeli soldiers arrested two Palestinian shepherds, one of them aged sixteen. The soldiers tried to arrest another Palestinian shepherd but villagers prevented the arrest by popular nonviolent action.
At about 10:40 a.m. four Palestinian shepherds were grazing their flocks on Khelly valley, in the South Hebron Hills area village of At-Tuwani, when the security chief of the Ma’on settlement arrived and called the Israeli army to prevent the shepherds from using land that is the object of settlement expansion. At 10:55 a.m. an Israeli Army jeep arrived in Khelly area and the soldiers started to run after the shepherds. The shepherds, who are all young boys, were scared and began to run away. The soldiers caught one Palestinian shepherd and immobilized him on the ground. Meanwhile Palestinians from At-Tuwani reached the soldiers and, by a nonviolent popular action, freed the shepherds. The soldiers then drove after three of the shepherds as they moved their sheep back to their village. One shepherd was able to run away while the others two were prevented from leaving by the soldiers. At around 11:30 a.m. the soldiers put them inside the army jeep and drove away. At about 8 p.m. the Palestinians were released.
Since the beginning of this year this is the fifth time that Palestinian shepherds have been harassed in the Khelly area. The Israeli administration declared Khelly valley a “closed military area” in September 2013, and it is the site of frequent threats and violence by Israeli settlers and Israeli armed forces. This valley is Palestinian property where the Palestinians continue to resist with their daily work, despite of all the restrictions.

COMUNICATO STAMPA

Update: Palestinian shepherd detained by Israeli police
(Italian Follow)
On January 27, at around 12:20 p.m., Israeli police detained a Palestinian shepherd in the South Hebron Hills area village of At Tuwani. He was released at about 5:00 p.m., without paying any fine.
The shepherd was grazing on the Khelly hill, near the Israeli settlement of Ma’on, when at around 11:20 a.m. the security chief of the settlement arrived at the place in order to take evidences of the Palestinian shepherd’s presence on the hill and call the Israeli forces.
At 11:35 a.m., Israeli army jeep came at the place, while the shepherd was still grazing his flock. At around 12:15 p.m., also Israeli police reached Khelly hill. The police stopped him. After some minutes, several women and children from At Tuwani village reached the place in order to disturb the Israeli forces action. Because the presence of a lot of people, the policemen chose to put the Palestinian into the jeep. After that the policemen and the soldiers checked the maps in the presence of the security chief of Ma’on and of a settler from the Israeli illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on, Yoshafat Tor. Finally the Israeli DCO reached them. At about 1:20 p.m. the policemen took the Palestinian to the Israeli police station of Kiryat Arba. After a questioning, the Palestinian was released at about 5:00 p.m.
Plowing season 2014
Despite the ongoing expansions of Israeli illegal outposts and the restrictions on accessing Palestinian owned lands inflicted by the Israeli civil administration, Palestinians successfully plowed their lands in the South Hebron Hills.
During the last few weeks Palestinian families gathered on their own lands to plow with tractors or donkeys. Palestinians from At Tuwani and Tuba villages plowed the lands surrounding Havat Ma’on Israeli illegal outpost, that during the month of November expanded with 25 iron pylons hammered in the ground rounding the border of the outpost.
Palestinians from Al Mufaqarah plowed the lands nearby Avigayil Israeli illegal outpost. On December 3, Israeli soldiers came twice toward the Palestinians and prevented them from working saying they were not allowed to plow that land. Palestinians asked Israeli soldiers to call the DCO and check their right to plow there. When DCO arrived on the place, Palestinians could prove they were allowed to work. On December 4, Israeli soldiers again came on the place and argued with International volunteers on the right of Palestinians to work the same land, but Palestinians kept on working without stopping for the presence of the army.
Palestinians from Jawwaya village had to wait the permission of the DCO in order to plow the land in front of Ma’on Israeli settlement’s entrance. That Palestinian owned land was declared a closed military area by the Israeli army on the spring of 2013 after different episodes of violence perpetuated by Israeli settlers toward Palestinians . On December 3, Palestinians could plow while Israeli soldiers and DCO officers monitored the all work.
“Plowing our own lands despite the violent policies of the Israeli civil administration, aimed to prevent us from accessing our basic resources, is an act of resistance in this area” says a member of the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee.
Update: Military escort endangered schoolchildren two times this week.
On october 12 and 13 the military escort left schoolchildren waiting for one hour in a dangerous place between Ma’on Israeli settlement and Havat Ma’on illegal outpost. Furthermore, in both occasions the escort left the children alone nearby the outpost, without completing the path.
Every day after school children wait at a dangerous meeting point for the Israeli military escort that since 10 years accompanies schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayir Al Abeed to and from school.
Since the beginning of the school year the escort was not present in two occasions, forcing the children to walk via a longer and still dangerous way. Between the 15 schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayir Al Abeed there are two 6 years old children who just began 1st grade and for whom is very hard to walk through the one hour and half long way.
Freedom Theatre performs “Atuwani”
The Freedom Theater permormed their new production “Atuwani” in the village of At Tuwani on October 29th and 30th and toured the West Bank.
The play follows extensive research and interviews with community members, with a special focus on the women who play a central role in At Tuwani’s struggle.
“To me this play is a perfect exercise in cultural resistance”, says Faisal. “We go to a community that is facing unimaginable pressure and harassment from settlers and army. Yet they have managed to stay together, to fight together. We collect their stories, analyze them, turn them into a play, and then our students tell the stories to other communities around the West Bank.”

E nonostante ciò riescono a stare insieme, a lottare insieme.
UPDATE: SHEPHERD’S DOG SHOT NEAR KARMEL SETTLEMENT
(Italian follows)
At Tuwani – On October 10, a dog belonging to a palestinian family from Um al Kher village, was shot.
According to Palestinian witnesses, early in the morning a shepherd was grazing his flock with the dog, when they heard a gun shot coming from the Israeli settlement of Karmel. After some minutes the dog returned to the village, with a bullet wound.
The Palestinians from Um al Kher called the Israeli police to complain about the situation and they were asked to go to Kiryat Arba police station. Considering that the police officers know there are not weapons owned by the palestinians from Um al Kher, they decided to enter in Karmel to collect evidences and to speak to the security chief of the settlement.

UPDATE: Israeli settlers entered into At Tuwani village escorted by army, South Hebron Hills area
September 19, 2014
At Tuwani – On September 17, at 5:30 a.m. three cars with fourteen Israeli settlers came into the Palestinian village of At Tuwani, escorted by two army jeep.
The settlers entered in the archeological site located between several Palestinian homes, in the middle of the village, one of them was armed. At Tuwani inhabitants started to gather at the closest Palestinian home and the owner of the house demanded to the Israeli army explanations about the happening. After the villagers nonviolent pressure on the Israelis both settlers and soldiers, they left the village at 6:15 a.m. This is just the last of several ongoing provocations carried out by the Israeli army and settlers to which the South Hebron Hills palestinian communities keep reacting in a nonviolent way.
In 2011, in At Tuwani were conducted excavations by Israeli archaeologists escorted by the army. Several archeologist that came to visit the village affirmed that the evidences are dating from the Byzantine period. Yet in December 2011 during an archeology meeting placed in the Israeli settlement of Suseya (in the South Hebron Hills area) was declared that the ruins are part of an ancient synagogue. In the meeting was also explained how to reach the site. The finding of ancient jewish ruins in the ’80s was the formal pretext to forcibly evict the Palestinian population of Susiya village.

17 giugno 2014

P/R: Operation Dove strongly condemns ‘Protective Edge’ military operation against Gaza
The Israeli occupation continues to “normalize” the violation of the Palestinian human rights
At Tuwani – Operation Dove, Nonviolent Peace Corps of the Pope John XXIII Community-Association, maintains a constant presence in the South Hebron hills, Palestinian Occupied Territory, continuing from 10 years to accompany and support the Palestinians of the area in their struggle choice by nonviolent methods in order to protect their lives and their rights.
“On the seventh day since the beginning of the Israeli state ‘Protective Edge’ military operation against the Gaza Strip (which has already killed at least 180 people and injured more than 1200), the situation here is alarming,” says a volunteer. “Although no serious things happened during the past 7 days, the local population is very apprehensive and scared. It is expected that in parallel with the Israeli bombing of the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army and settlers could begin a new massive violence phase in the area. A lot of shepherds, that we usually accompany by non-armed escort during their everyday activities, now they stay in their houses and don’t approach work areas close to Israeli settlements or outposts, because scared of attacks that could attempt on their safety. ”
Operation Dove strongly condemns this further outbreak of violence: in addition to the massacre and the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, the Israeli military operation that followed the kidnapping and murder of three young Israelis, in the West Bank has led to at least 10 people killed including children, and 150 injured during the raids. More than 500 people have been kidnapped and imprisoned, many of them subjected to “administrative detention”, so without charge. More than two thousand properties were raided, damaged or looted. Towns, villages and refugee camps have been put under siege by checkpoints and roadblocks.
Operation Dove strongly condemns the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories that dehumanizes the occupier and the occupied. This dehumanization, institutionalized, sought and wanted by the occupying state, makes possible the murder of three young Israelis by two Palestinians, as it seems, or the barbaric murder of a 16 year old Palestinian from East Jerusalem, burned alive by Israeli extremists. This occupation “normalizes” the continued human rights violations of the Palestinian people.
Operation Dove has maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and the South Hebron Hills since 2004.

15 luglio 2014
