Peace through the eye of a needle

The At Tuwani village Women’s Cooperative together with Israeli women gave life to Two Neighbors: an against-the-odds business partnership that defies politics in favor of beauty, common sense, and shared economic benefit. The new project is leaded by a team made by Israeli women, Palestinian women and American men and women who founded the Center for Emerging Futures that holds gatherings for Israelis and Palestinians on the border between Israel and the West Bank.

After spending time at a Global Village Square meeting organized by the Center for Emerging Futures, women from both sides of the conflict decided they would like to work together producing beautiful items which showcased their talents and heritage. They wanted to do this together, showing that Israelis and Palestinian women, who were tired of waiting for the politicians to declare peace, could work together now to improve their economic condition and demonstrate peaceful relations on a grass roots level.

Two Neighbors – Due vicini di casa

UPDATE: An other settler’s harrasment towards the Palestinian children from Tuba and Maghayr Al Abeed

giugno 3, 2014 at 4:49 pm

On June 2, at about 10 am, the Palestinian children from the villages of Tuba and Maghayir Al Abeed, that after school were waiting at the meeting point the military escort, were reached by a group of Israelis from the nearby settlement of Ma ‘on.

The group was composed of the Ma’on security coordinator, armed with rifle and handgun, two settlers, a journalist and a camera operator who began filming, in an invasive manner, the Palestinian children and International volunteers, without give them any explanation.

When questioned by internationals, the reporter said to belong to Channel 10, an Israeli television channel, and to be there to do a reportage about the use of video cameras. He later declared to be unaware of recent events and that they do not understand the discomfort of the children, who were trying to hide their faces from the intrusiveness of the video camera.A few minutes later came the military escort and the children came back to home, followed by the group for the first part of the path.
The incident took place in a week by the arrest of four girls for a supposed theft of cherries. The settlers who testified against them were among those present today.

PRESS RELEASE: Four Palestinian 12-14 years old girls detained by the Israeli Police

Settlers accused them of theft of cherries
(Italian follows)

May 28, 2014

At Tuwani – On May 27, four Palestinian 12-14 years old girls from the South Hebron hills area villages of Tuba and Maghayir Al Abeed have been arrested by the Israeli police on the charge of theft of cherries in a field in which Israeli settlers from Ma’on settlement are growing several cherry trees.
This grove is situated close to the place in which the children usually wait an Israeli military escort in order to come back to home. The escort was established in 2004 by the Children’s Rights Committee of the Knesset because of the ongoing attacks to the Palestinian children (coming from the nearby villages of Tuba and Maghayir Al Abeed to the school of At Tuwani) from Havat Ma’on and Ma’on settlers.
At 11.00 am, while the children were walking accompanied by the Israeli army in order to come back to home, a car with few settlers inside stopped in the middle of the street, avoiding the possibility for the children to continue the path. Israeli settlers stated that some children had stolen cherries from the grove.
So, the Israeli soldiers forced the children to sit down on the road under a hot sun without any access to water, preventing them to come back home.
The Palestinian children asked to the Israeli soldiers some explanations about the accuse that the settlers were moving against them and they also wanted to see videos and photos supporting the accuse, but the Israeli army didn’t give any information. Some minutes later, also the Ma’on security coordinator arrived where the children were stopped, accusing them of theft, even if he wasn’t present at the moment of the fact.

At 11:50 am the Israeli Police arrived. The police officer asked to one settler to recognize the children that he saw in the cherry trees fields. The settlers identified four young girls. The girls have been forced to go up in the police car.
The other students were accompanied along the path by the Israeli army.
The 4 young girls were detained in the police car for one hour. Then the girls were taken to the Israeli Police station of Kiryat Arba and brought for interrogation, without their parents being present.

According to the +972 magazinethe layer who is representing the minors spoke with police on the phone and she was told that two girls were released once their parents were contacted (one is 12 years old, the other seems to have speech disabilities). The two others were being held for questioning and released after it. According to  Haggai Matar, “it would be illegal for the police to question them without the presence of their parents”.

At 4:00 pm the Israeli police sent them to Palestinian police in Hebron, that didn’t want to release them until when one from their family identified them. So, at around 7:00 pm,  the girls were released.
Operation Dove has maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and the South Hebron Hills since 2004.

COMUNICATO STAMPA

The beginning of the harvest season

Palestinians harvesting in Kharrouba valley

Despite the latest violence of the settlers of Havat Ma’on Israeli illegal outpost, Palestinians have started harvesting their land in the South Hebron Hills.

In the beginning of April, Israeli settlers ruined Palestinian cultivated fields by bringing their flocks to graze on them. On April 3 a flock damaged fields in Kharrouba valley, situated in the south-western side of Havat Ma’on outpost and owned by Palestinian inhabitants of At Tuwani. On April 7 a flock damaged fields in Umm Zeitouna valley, situated in the western side of the outpost of Havat Ma’on and of the settlement of Ma’on, cultivated by Palestinian inhabitants of Tuba. On April 8 a flock damaged fields on Jabeld Off hill, situated southern from the outpost and owned by Palestinian inhabitants of Maghayir Al Abeed. On the first and on the last occasions, Palestinians reported the incidents to the Israeli police who came on the place and watched videos proving the facts but didn’t take any measure against the israeli settlers.

This week Palestinian families started harvesting these fields, accompanied by Operation Dove volunteers.

Palestinians from the South Hebron Hills keep facing the Israeli occupation through the popular nonviolent resistance.

March 30: Land Day

marzo 30, 2014 at 6:21 pm

On 30 March 1976, thousands of people belonging to the Palestinian minority in Israel gathered to protest Israeli government plans to expropriate 60,000 dunams of Arab-owned land in West Bank. In the resulting confrontations with Israeli police, six Palestinians were killed, hundreds wounded, and hundreds jailed. In the intervening years, those events have become consecrated in the Palestinian memory as Land Day.

After years of military rule and political docility, Land Day 1976 was the first act of mass resistance by the Palestinians inside Israel against the israeli policy of expansion of the land.

In the Palestinian village of At Tuwani the South Hebron Hills Popular Commitee organised a nonviolen action that consisted in planting olive trees in front of the Israeli settlemen of Ma’on and the Israeli illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on. The Commitee was joined by 30 students from Yatta University, toghether with professors and the principal. The action took place around 11 am and at 11:50 am an army jeep arrived on the place. Four soldiers prevented Palestinians from getting close to the fence that protects cherry trees fields. This land is Palestinian owned, but was cultivated by settlers with cherry trees since the creation of the Israeli outpost in the year 2000.

Palestinian shepherd arrested by Israeli Police in the South Hebron Hills

marzo 23, 2014 at 3:44 pm

On March 22 Israeli police arrested Zaaid Salame Mehamre, a shepherd from the Palestinian village of Maghayr Al-Abeed, while he was grazing his sheep on Jabel Doff (the location where the Havat Ma’on outpost used to stand before the year 2000, when it was moved to Hill 833). The arrest was carried out under the accusation of “trespassing”, although no official documents on the ownership of the land were presented.

In the morning, Mehamre was grazing his sheep in the Palestinian valleys and hills surrounding the Israeli illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on. At 1:30 p.m., Mehamre moved to the top of the hill to follow his flock, and was followed by a police car, which later drove past him. 15 minutes later an Israeli policeman declared Mehamre under arrest and escorted him to an area where there was another police car, a District Coordination Office car and three army jeeps, together with four Israeli settlers.

Ta’ayush activists, who were already present in the area accompanying other shepherds, immediately arrived and tried to understand the situation. The activists asked the Israeli officers for clarification on the ownership of the land, which they had declared Israeli, however no maps or official documents were presented.

At 2:20 p.m. Israeli soldiers violently chased away Mehamre’s flock, which remained unattended. The soldiers pushed the flock toward the valley south of the hill.

At 2:30 p.m., Mehamre was taken by police to the Kyriat Arba police station. He was released in the later afternoon after a bail of 500 shekels was paid by Ta’ayush and the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee.

P/R: South Hebron Hills Popular Committee nonviolently prevents Israeli forces from halting construction of a kindergarten

marzo 3, 2014 at 4:31 pm

(Segue versione in italiano)

March 3, 2014

At Tuwani – On Sunday afternoon while Palestinians were building the structure for a new kindergarten in the South Hebron Hills village of At Tuwani, Israeli officials from the District Coordinating Office (DCO) and army came to confiscate the building materials. Palestinian men, women and children, coordinated by the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee, successfully prevented the Israeli forces from taking away most of the materials through a nonviolent action. After some three hours of confrontation, the Israeli forces took away a cement mixer and cart. No official confiscation order was delivered in advance.

At 1.30 pm men were working on the kindergarten construction site when DCO officials arrived to the area, accompanied by four soldiers. The same officers and soldiers had already been there earlier that morning, to take pictures of the new building. At 2.51 pm two army vehicles with eight additional soldiers arrived on the scene. In the meantime dozens of area’s inhabitants gathered to protest the ongoing confiscation. At 3.24 pm the Israeli police arrived and checked different Palestinian IDs and international passports. After ten minutes an Israeli truck arrived to carry away the building materials, while women and children were moving those afar to prevent the confiscation. At 3.55 pm three officers from the Border Police also arrived.

Palestinians interposed themselves to stop the Israeli forces. Soldiers and policemen filmed them and violently tried to push them away. Palestinians refused to leave the construction site, remaining steadfast in the place.

At 4.18 pm an ambulance arrived to assist a Palestinian man who had previously fainted and received help from Palestinians and Israeli soldiers. In the meanwhile a cement mixer and a cart were placed on the truck, which was taken away by the Israeli forces. Throughout the action an Israeli activist, international volunteers and B’tselem staff members were present, filming the whole action.

The building under construction would become the first kindergarten for the villages of the South Hebron Hills.

On February 28 the Israeli Civil Administration confiscated playground equipment donated by the Italian government to a school in the Khan al-Amar Bedouin encampment, east of Jerusalem (Haartetz).

Palestinian communities of the South Hebron Hills area are still strongly involved in using nonviolence as a way to resist to the Israeli occupation

Operation Dove has maintained an international presence in At Tuwani and the South Hebron Hills since 2004.
