Tension increased up to the South Hebron Hills: several attacks against Palestinians

(italian follows)

Tensions between Palestinians and Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank have soared in recent days after two Israeli settlers were shot dead near Nablus on Thursday October 1 by suspected Palestinian attackers. Since the shootings, there has been an upsurge of settler attacks against Palestinian people and their property.

Clashes have erupted across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as a result of ongoing confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli forces at the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Palestinians religious authority claim that the continuos and repeated settler’s tours on the al-Aqsa mosque are provocating and violating the sacratility of one of the most important places for the muslims worshippers.

Israeli police says they are restricting access to the Old City of Jerusalem aftera Palestinian man killed two Israelis in the historic neighborhood.Only Israeli citizens, Old City residents, tourists, businesspeople working in the area and students studying there will be allowed to enter, police said in a statement Sunday.

A large number of Israeli settler attacks were reported across South Hebron Hills area during the weekend.

On October 3 at around 10 pm a group of settlers were reported to have stormed al-Birkeh (nearby Yatta), and assaulted an unarmed elderly Palestinian park guard (65 years old), locals said.

On October 3 at night, as Maan News reported, a group of settlers smashed the windows of a car belonging to a Palestinian doctor, Imad Abu Iram, near the village of Zif, south of Hebron.

On October 4, at about 2 am, Israeli settlers attacked the Palestinian village of As-Seefer. After having teared down the fence dividing the village from the settlement of Metzadot Yehuda which surround the palestinian village, the settlers started throwing stones to houses. The attack in the middle of the night scared all families living there and damaged a car, an aluminum canopy and solar panels. Children of As-Seefer, the day after the attack, were too afraid to cross the checkpoint to go to school, and decided to stay at home.

In the early morning of October 4, settlers from Mitzpe Yair illegal outpost closed the road from Birr al Idd to Jinba with a roadblock preventing Palestinian teachers to arrive on time to Jinba school.

On Monday October 5 in order to re-open the road,Palestinians and Ta’ayush Israeli activists removed the roadblock.

On October 5 in At-Tuwani village an army jeep entered the village at 11.25 p.m. and threw 4 stun granades between the houses scaring Palestinians in the middle of the night.

On Thursday October 6, at around 2:00 a.m. settlers raided the village of As-Sefeer for the second time in three days. Settlers threw stones against houses and families, injuring one children of 12 years old from the Abu Qpeita’s family. Settlers also damaged again the solar panels of the village. The injured children was took to Yatta hospital.

OD is registering a very fast escalation of settlers and Israeli military violence in all the West Bank.

This violence against Palestinian civil population cannot be considered as a “war against terrorism” neither cannot be justified with Israeli security needs, but is the direct consequence of the Israeli Occupation plan.

OD looks at the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza siege, with its continuing settlement expansion and military repression, as the frame which this escalation is developing in.

OD rejects any kind of violence and recourse to weapon and, at the same time, recognizes the right for Palestinian people to resist.

OD is accompanying and supporting the palestinian nonviolent popular struggle.

OD has maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and the South Hebron Hills since 2004.

UPDATE: Israeli military escort late again for the school patrol

settembre 23, 2015 at 4:28 pm

In the morning of September 21, due to an anticipated school closing time, the schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed arrived at the designated escort meeting place with an advance of 3 hours, at 10.30. The Israeli soldiers who should escort the palestinian children through the shorter route that connect the villages of At-Tuwani and Tuba didn’t appear, although informed.
The children had to wait for the escort one hour and exposed themselves in a dangerous place between Ma’on Israeli settlement and Havat Ma’on illegal outpost, risking to be attacked by violent national-religious Israeli settlers that lives here.
Since the beginning of the school year the escort was late several times, forcing the children to wait on the street and putting themselves at risk.

UPDATE: Two settlers harassments in one week

settembre 23, 2015 at 4:15 pm

On the third week of Semptember settlers from Ma’on and the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on injuried and harassed Palestinians.
In the afternoon of Semptember 16, in the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani, an Israeli settler from the near settlement of Ma’on harassed a twelve years old palestinian sheperd while he was grazing his flock in a palestinian owned land not far from the settlement.
The settler was walking by the street behind the fence dividing Ma’on from the Palestinian owned land. Noticing the palestinian sheperd, the settler started injuring him in hebrew. In addition he showed up a  palestinian flag, using it in an offensive way and throwed it on the ground several times before leaving the place.
Three days later, on the September 19 afternoon, eleven settlers, all minors from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on harassed a Palestinian man who was returning home in Maghaiyr Al Abeed, a small village near At-Tuwani. The settlers blocked the road standing in the middle of it. For this reason, the Palestinian had to take a long road to return home and avoid the risk of being attacked.  Once the interational volounteers reached the place the settlers slowly returned to Havat Ma’on.

UPDATE: Together at school to stop violence

settembre 16, 2015 at 1:52 pm

In the mornings of September 13th and 15th 2015, in the school of At-Tuwani the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee organized some activities that involved students of every class and most of their moms. The initiative was called: “At-Tuwani school volunteers for the end of violence”.
Boys and girls took part in three kinds of workshops. The first, called “My school is my home”, consisted in transforming the ordinary chemistry and physics laboratory into a kitchen. Moms and children prepared some traditional sweets as balouza or the typical Palestinian bread, the sajj, with olive oil and zaatar. One of the most committed women of the village jokes with a bread in her hands and says in front of the camera: “Here’s the Palestinian heritage and civilization! ”
In the second activity, “My mother read me a story. My mother is my friend “, a mother read a story to the younger children, before letting them draw freely.
Finally, the last day, boys and girls of At-Tuwani learned how to use a video camera.

UPDATE: Stop work order delivered for school in South Hebron Hills

settembre 3, 2015 at 8:22 am

11944547_541647785986184_537612692_n

On September 2, in the morning, Israeli District Coordination Office (DCO) and soldiers broke into the school of Shaab al-Butum, a Palestinian village situated in the South Hebron Hills.
DCO and soldiers irrupted into the backyard of the school and delivered stop work order for all the structure, including the fences. Therefore, they intimidated the children and interrupted the lessons.
The school is a brand-new structure that was inaugurated just last week. It encompasses the first six classes and receives thirty-two children coming from Shaab al-Butum and the surrounding villages. Without this school, the children would have to go to the further village of At-Tuwani or to the cities of Al-Birkeh and Yatta to attend classes.

agosto 30, 2015 at 10:56 am

It is summer, time of holiday. Even in the South Hebron Hills the desire of the sea fills people’s minds. On August 28 in a hot morning, around 40 people, all women and children, left the village of At-Tuwani in the direction of the sea. A hardly reachable destination, because for Palestinians the freedom of movement is still a goal to achieve. At the checkpoint to enter Israel, women and children underwent long and humiliating inspections.
Rashid, 9 years old, has been questioned alone, without the presence of his mother. The woman could not manage the situation and the chance to reach the sea has been denied to her and her child.
Despite this unpleasant fact, the women did not lose their good mood. Most of them haven’t had the chance to see the sea, but this time, despite the oppression of the Israeli occupation, they could enjoy a cheerful day.

UPDATE: First days of school in the South Hebron Hills

agosto 25, 2015 at 12:36 pm

August 24 was the first day of school in At Tuwani Palestinian village, in the South Hebron Hills. The school in At Tuwani gathers children from age 6 to 18, coming from the villages of At Tuwani, Al Mufaqarah, Ar Rakeez, Al Birkeh, Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed. For the 11th year in a row the schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed are coming to school and going back home escorted by the Israeli army. The road that connects Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed to At Tuwani, main gateway to the South Hebron Hills area, became impassable since 15 years ago Havat Ma’on Israeli illegal outpost was built next to the already existing settlement of Ma’on, leaving the road inbetween under continuos threat of violence for the Palestinians. The only Palestinians allowed on the road are the schoolchildren, twice a day, accompanied by an Israeli military escort established in 2004 to protect them from the violence of Israeli settlers.

UPDATE: Israeli settlers and army harass Palestinian shepherds in the South Hebron Hills

agosto 23, 2015 at 7:45 am

In the afternoon of August 21, in the Palestinian village of At Tuwani, Israeli settlers from Ma’on threw stones to two Palestinian kids who were shepherding their flocks. Palestinian inhabitants of the village immediately reached the kids, while two Army jeeps arrived and stood near the grazing land.

In the early morning of August 22, four Palestinian shepherds were grazing their flocks on Palestinian owned lands substanding the Israeli illegal outpost of Mitzpe Yair, when two settlers came from the outpost and chased away the flocks. A few minutes later an army jeep arrived on the place and pushed the shepherds in the direction of Palestinian villages, away from the Israeli outpost. At the same time  Israeli army, Border Police and DCO arrived on the place and declared the area as military closed and prevented the Palestinian owner of the land Umm Al Arayes, who arrived with his family to claim their right to access the land, from entering it as it happens every saturday since 2012. Israeli settlers stood watching the scene for most of the time, without any consequence.
