On January 2 the Israeli army failed to escort Palestinian schoolchildren from the villages of Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed both on the way to reach the school in At Tuwani and on the way back home.

In the morning, after 45 minutes waiting for the soldiers, the schoolchildren decided to walk on a longer and more dangerous path, accompanied by Operation Dove (OD) volunteers. The Israeli army claimed on the phone that the soldiers were engaged in a military training and couldn’t escort the children. The two youngest children of the group had to come back home because the alternative path was too hard and they couldn’t attend school. The children finally reached the school walking more than one hour and changing their path because of the presence on their way of Israeli settlers from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on.  Because of the Israeli army negligence, the schoolchildren lost more than one hour of lesson.

Israeli military escort delay on the afternoon

In the afternoon of the same day the Israeli forces didn’t show up at the meeting point, violating their own duty. After one hour and half waiting, the schoolchildren decided to move, accompanied by OD volunteers, through the longer path. On the way the group met an Israeli army jeep meandering around the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on. As OD volunteers demanded an explanation for their delay, Israeli soldiers replied they were looking for the meeting point with the children. The schoolchildren succeeded to come back to Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed escorted by the Israeli soldiers and accompanied by OD volunteers, through the long path, itself dangerous. On the way back, some Israeli settlers from Havat Ma’on illegal outpost chased OD volunteers, without reaching them. Some of the settlers gathered near the army jeep speaking with the soldiers.

The Israeli army has the duty to protect the children from the Palestinian villages of Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed on their way to school, but many times their misconduct puts the children in danger or forces them to wait hours and to walk in an area where settlers often have attacked them. Once again, Israeli army negligence didn’t guarantee basic and fundamental rights of the children, as the right to education.

The shortest route connecting the villages of Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed to the rest of the area is a main public road that passes between Ma’on settlement and Havat Ma’on illegal outpost. Because of the presence of Israeli settlements and the ongoing violence from Israeli settlers, Palestinians are not able to use that road anymore.

UPDATE: Karmel settlement’s sewer pipe poisons Palestinian farmland in Umm Al Kheir

Palestinian olive trees reached by Karmel settlement’s sewage

On the first of January 2017 the new sewer pipe of the Israeli settlement of Karmel started to work, poisoning Palestinian farmlands in Umm Al Kheir village, in the South Hebron hills.

The start up of the sewer pipe entailed the spilling of noxious liquid in the near Palestinian farmland where are planted dozens of olive trees.

The sewage also is poisoning a part of land used every day by the Palestinian shepherds to graze their flocks. For this reason the spilling of liquid is also dangerous for their sheep.

On December 8 the Israeli forces leveled Palestinian lands in order to install the sewer pipe to service the Israeli settlement of Karmel that lies few meters away from Umm al Kheir.

On December 27, an Israeli settler coming from the settlement of Carmel prevent some Palestinians to plow their land in Umm Al Kheir village. The settler tried to steal the donkey of the farmers but the Palestinians succeeded to let him escape. Palestinians left the spot, giving up to finish their work.

When Israeli Police reached the village, the policeman spoke only with the settler. After a while they left the area without taking any measure in order to protect the Palestinian farmer and their work in the area.

Once more the Israeli Forces activity in the area is aimed only to protect Israeli settlers, and not to guarantee the basic rights to the Palestinians, as established by International law.

On the morning of the 21 of December the schoolchildren from Tuba had to wait 40 minutes the Israeli soldiers, who had to escort them on the path to the school in the Palestinian village of At Tuwani. Also on the morning of the following day the Israeli soldiers put in danger the schoolchildren forcing them to wait in the same dangerous place for 20 minutes.

In the same time Operation Dove volunteers couldn’t succeed to monitor children’s escort because of the presence of Israeli settlers in the area. Six settlers ran out from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on and reached the volunteers on the lookout place. The settlers chased the volunteers forcing them to run up to the Palestinian village of Al Mufaqarah preventing them to keep guard the schoolchildren.Furthermore the Israeli settlers entered in the Palestinian village and after a while they came back in the Havat Ma’on illegal outpost.

UPDATE: Israeli soldiers refuse to escort a student from Tuwani to Tuba Palestinian village

dicembre 6, 2016 at 6:57 pm

p1010315

(Italian follows)

On December 6 two Israeli soldiers refused to escort one Palestinian boy who was coming back from university to his home in Tuba village. Israeli military escort has the duty to accompany schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayr al Abeed Palestinian villages because Israeli settlers (from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on) attacked the children many times.

Today the soldiers refused to escort one of the student because, as they said, “he was too old” and they can “escort only children and women”. The soldiers didn’t give the boy, the International volunteers and the lawyer any other explanations.

They forced the children to wait in a dangerous place for half an hour. After the pressure of Israeli activists and lawyers on DCO (Israeli civil administration) they accepted to escort the boy. At half of the path they stopped again to check the ID of the student, forcing the Palestinian children to wait in very dangerous place close Havat Ma’on outpost for other 15 minutes.

This is a serious misconduct of the Israeli military escort, which, once more doesn’t guarantee the right to education to Palestinian students. Despite Israeli Parliament decision that protects Palestinian children, their safety depends every day on arbitrary conducts of Israeli soldiers.

Aisha

novembre 11, 2016 at 6:07 pm

(Italian follows)

My name is Aisha, like a song. I’m 25 years old and I’m Palestinian. I am from the little village of Tuba. In Tuba we live in caverns and tents on a barren hill. Today morning I was been in the city in order to see a doctor. My one year daughter is sick and she keeps crying.

Early I lived Tuba with my little brother,  that is attending the third class of the elementary school. Every day he is escorted by the Israeli soldiers to reach the school in At Tuwani safely and today I walked with the soldiers and the schoolchildren too.

But unfortunately I didn’t succeed to come back in Tuba with them because in the clinic there was a lot of people and I had to wait. I get back on my feet. If you want to reach my village Tuba, you have to walk near a hill covered by a grove of pines. You can’t see them but inside the grove a group of Israeli settlers is living. Many times they chased my. Many times they forced me to break out. Many times they forced me to change my path. Just doing this I came back home safely. Every day my little brother is escorted by the Israeli Army to the school because of them. Today the situation is very complicated, I am not alone.Today I am with my little daughter, who is not walking yet and I have a little baby in my belly. After few days I am about to give birth. The path is long and hard if I want to avoid the settlers. But today the settlers are waiting me on the road and they are cutting me off. I have to take a longest road.

I roll up my skirt on the bump and I give my honey to a girl, who is accompanying us. I face every step carefully. I am wearing scuff and the trail is full of stones and spiny brambly. The sun hammers down on us and the most dangerous part of the road is uphill. We have to arrive on the top of the hill and my honey is still crying. I have the medicine for her in my handbag. I’ m thinking about the men in the grove and on the shorter road to reach my home.

I have not done anything wrong to them. I am not dangerous. They have no right to make my life miserable. We are just three women walking silent in order to get no attention from them. I am also pregnant and with my little daughter. I am strong and I have the strength to force all this. I don’t want give up to have, revenge and violence. I don’t want become like them. I want teach to my little daughters that the borders are just in the mind of those who put them and the violence price is also paid by its user.

UPDATE: Settlers and Israeli Border Police harassments in South Hebron Hills

novembre 10, 2016 at 10:58 am
Israeli settler from Havat Ma'on who tried to catch Palestinian and Internationals

Israeli settler from Havat Ma’on who tried to catch Palestinian and Internationals

(Italian follows)

In the afternoon of November 9, Operation Dove volunteers were accompanying a Palestinian young woman who was going home from At-Tuwani to Tuba village.  Two Israeli settlers, coming from Havat Ma’on illegal outpost  tried to cut across in front of the group preventing Palestinians and Internationals to use the usual path and forcing them to take another and longer road to reach Tuba village. Since the beginning of September Havat Ma’on settlers are expanding their illegal outpost in direction of Tuba Palestinian village. Every day they prevent the Palestinian inhabitants to use the road attacking and chasing them.

In the meanwhile the security chief of Ma’on Israeli settlement was harassing some minor Palestinian shepherds in Khelly valley, located between Ma’on and At-Tuwani. The settler took pictures of the Palestinians and threatened to call the soldiers in order to arrest them.

Then, one hour later, Israeli Border Police stopped two Operation Dove volunteers who were walking from At Tuwani to Al Mufaqara Palestinian village, near Avigayil Israeli illegal outpost. Policemen forced the volunteers to show them the material collected in their cameras and obliged them to delete it, under the threat of taking them to Kyriat Arba police station. Israeli policemen and two Avigayil’s settlers present on the spot told to the Internationals that is strictly forbidden take pictures of Avigayil outpost and that they will be arrested if the Police will catch them doing it. The settlers left the spot insulting the volunteers and after a while also Border Police went away without giving the Internationals any other explication of their orders.

Once again it seems there is a connivance between settlers and Israeli forces who don’t take legal measure to end settlers’ violence and the expansion of the illegal outposts.

UPDATE: Israeli army escort doesn’t show up and settlers block Palestinian children’s way home

ottobre 26, 2016 at 8:56 pm

On October 26 the Israeli escort army (that has to accompany the children from Tuba and Maghayr al Abeed Palestinians villages to school) didn’t show up. After more than one hour waiting, the children decided to walk home without soldiers. Meanwhile, Israeli settlers coming from the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on were blocking their way home, standing on the road.
Palestinian children and Operation Dove volunteers had to take a longer road to reach the village of Tuba safely.

In the morning of the same day the Israeli army was half an hour late for the children’s escort.

Misconducts of Israeli escort army and violent behaviors of settlers put Palestinian children in danger and deny their right to education, violating Articles 2-3-6-16-19-38 of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On September 17 a group of settlers from Havat Ma’on Israeli illegal outpost burst into the Palestinian village of At-Tuwani, in the South Hebron Hills.

At 8:40 pm Palestinian inhabitants of At-Tuwani noticed car lights in the valley between the village and the outpost and after a while three settlers, one of them carrying an automatic rifle, reached the first house of the village. The settlers started to search between the Palestinians gathered on the roof of the house, putting light and rifle in the face of the people, filming and threatening them. Women and children were scared inside the house.

In the meanwhile, at the entrance of At-Tuwani village, Israeli soldiers were stopping and searching Palestinian cars that were coming to the village.

After few minutes another group of settlers, some of them with weapons, and Israeli soldiers reached the spot. One of the settlers tried to persuade the Israeli soldiers to arrest some Palestinians. Moreover some soldiers accused the Palestinian inhabitants of At-Tuwani to hide thieves, without any evidences.

Several times the Palestinians asked the Israeli soldiers and settlers to leave the village and stop threatening the people. Palestinians called the Israeli police that didn’t show up.

At 9:05 pm Israeli settlers and soldiers came back to the illegal outpost of Havat Ma’on and they continued to patrol the area for one hour after the happened.
