La strada per il mare

agosto 30, 2015 at 10:56 am

It is summer, time of holiday. Even in the South Hebron Hills the desire of the sea fills people’s minds. On August 28 in a hot morning, around 40 people, all women and children, left the village of At-Tuwani in the direction of the sea. A hardly reachable destination, because for Palestinians the freedom of movement is still a goal to achieve. At the checkpoint to enter Israel, women and children underwent long and humiliating inspections.
Rashid, 9 years old, has been questioned alone, without the presence of his mother. The woman could not manage the situation and the chance to reach the sea has been denied to her and her child.
Despite this unpleasant fact, the women did not lose their good mood. Most of them haven’t had the chance to see the sea, but this time, despite the oppression of the Israeli occupation, they could enjoy a cheerful day.

UPDATE: First days of school in the South Hebron Hills

agosto 25, 2015 at 12:36 pm

August 24 was the first day of school in At Tuwani Palestinian village, in the South Hebron Hills. The school in At Tuwani gathers children from age 6 to 18, coming from the villages of At Tuwani, Al Mufaqarah, Ar Rakeez, Al Birkeh, Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed. For the 11th year in a row the schoolchildren from Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed are coming to school and going back home escorted by the Israeli army. The road that connects Tuba and Maghayir al Abeed to At Tuwani, main gateway to the South Hebron Hills area, became impassable since 15 years ago Havat Ma’on Israeli illegal outpost was built next to the already existing settlement of Ma’on, leaving the road inbetween under continuos threat of violence for the Palestinians. The only Palestinians allowed on the road are the schoolchildren, twice a day, accompanied by an Israeli military escort established in 2004 to protect them from the violence of Israeli settlers.

UPDATE: Israeli settlers and army harass Palestinian shepherds in the South Hebron Hills

agosto 23, 2015 at 7:45 am

In the afternoon of August 21, in the Palestinian village of At Tuwani, Israeli settlers from Ma’on threw stones to two Palestinian kids who were shepherding their flocks. Palestinian inhabitants of the village immediately reached the kids, while two Army jeeps arrived and stood near the grazing land.

In the early morning of August 22, four Palestinian shepherds were grazing their flocks on Palestinian owned lands substanding the Israeli illegal outpost of Mitzpe Yair, when two settlers came from the outpost and chased away the flocks. A few minutes later an army jeep arrived on the place and pushed the shepherds in the direction of Palestinian villages, away from the Israeli outpost. At the same time  Israeli army, Border Police and DCO arrived on the place and declared the area as military closed and prevented the Palestinian owner of the land Umm Al Arayes, who arrived with his family to claim their right to access the land, from entering it as it happens every saturday since 2012. Israeli settlers stood watching the scene for most of the time, without any consequence.

Ha’aretz: Halting demolition of Palestinian village will be the exception, not the rule

luglio 22, 2015 at 8:12 am

Amira Hass – Ha’aretz / 22.07.2015

The United States and Europe in recent days made out a check in the name of “Sussia.” Once again they have raised expectations about their ability to put the brakes on Israel’s colonizing madness. The temptation to be optimistic is great. The fear of bitter disappointment (and the joy of the enemies of logic) are even greater.

Although Sussia is not a story that moves the Israelis as a whole, the bleeding hearts among us draw encouragement from the fact that at least this particular check might be cashed. That is, that the plans to destroy the village might not be carried out. Sussia has become a symbol. And that is precisely the trap.

luglio 21, 2015 at 8:21 pm

The EU joins Washington in its call to spare Sussia while criticizing construction in the settlements and Israel’s role in the stalled peace process.

The 28 foreign ministers of the European Union’s foreign ministers have called on Israel to “to halt plans for forced transfer of population and demolition of Palestinian housing and infrastructure” in the village in the West Bank’s South Hebron Hills.

Ha’aretz: U.S. urges Israel: Don’t demolish West Bank village

Resident of Sussia, near Hebron, were ordered by the Civil Administration to destroy 40 structures; State Dept. spokesman: Such actions will have impact beyond these individuals.
The United States has urged Israel against carrying out any demolitions in the Palestinian village of Sussia in the South Hebron Hills in the West Bank.

“Demolition of this Palestinian village or of parts of it, and evictions of Palestinians from their homes would be harmful and provocative,” State Department spokesman John Kirby told reporters at a press conference in Washington on Thursday. “Such actions have an impact beyond those individuals and families who are evicted.”

“We are concerned that the demolition of this village may worsen the atmosphere for a peaceful resolution and would set a damaging standard for displacement and land confiscation, particularly given settlement-related activity in the area,” Kirby said, adding that the U.S. urges “Israeli authorities to work with the residents of the village to finalize a plan for the village that addresses the residents’ humanitarian needs.”

These statements were echoed by the U.S. acting consul in Jerusalem, Dorothy Shea, who visited the village on Thursday. “We are closely following developments in the village, and we are urging that demolitions not proceed,” Shea said.

(link)
