Ha’aretz: Halting demolition of Palestinian village will be the exception, not the rule

luglio 22, 2015 at 8:12 am

Amira Hass – Ha’aretz / 22.07.2015

The United States and Europe in recent days made out a check in the name of “Sussia.” Once again they have raised expectations about their ability to put the brakes on Israel’s colonizing madness. The temptation to be optimistic is great. The fear of bitter disappointment (and the joy of the enemies of logic) are even greater.

Although Sussia is not a story that moves the Israelis as a whole, the bleeding hearts among us draw encouragement from the fact that at least this particular check might be cashed. That is, that the plans to destroy the village might not be carried out. Sussia has become a symbol. And that is precisely the trap.

Israeli forces arrest two shepherds in South Hebron Hills
Villagers prevent the arrest of another Palestinian by a popular nonviolent action

February 8, 2015

At-Tuwani – South Hebron Hills, West Bank

On February 6, in the morning, Israeli soldiers arrested two Palestinian shepherds, one of them aged sixteen. The soldiers tried to arrest another Palestinian shepherd but villagers prevented the arrest by popular nonviolent action.

At about 10:40 a.m. four Palestinian shepherds were grazing their flocks on Khelly valley, in the South Hebron Hills area village of At-Tuwani, when the security chief of the Ma’on settlement arrived and called the Israeli army to prevent the shepherds from using land that is the object of settlement expansion. At 10:55 a.m. an Israeli Army jeep arrived in Khelly area and the soldiers started to run after the shepherds. The shepherds, who are all young boys, were scared and began to run away. The soldiers caught one Palestinian shepherd and immobilized him on the ground. Meanwhile Palestinians from At-Tuwani reached the soldiers and, by a nonviolent popular action, freed the shepherds. The soldiers then drove after three of the shepherds as they moved their sheep back to their village. One shepherd was able to run away while the others two were prevented from leaving by the soldiers. At around 11:30 a.m. the soldiers put them inside the army jeep and drove away. At about 8 p.m. the Palestinians were released.

Since the beginning of this year this is the fifth time that Palestinian shepherds have been harassed in the Khelly area. The Israeli administration declared Khelly valley a “closed military area” in September 2013, and it is the site of frequent threats and violence by Israeli settlers and Israeli armed forces. This valley is Palestinian property where the Palestinians continue to resist with their daily work, despite of all the restrictions.

Operation Dove has maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and South Hebron Hills since 2004.

COMUNICATO STAMPA

Update: IDF demolishes for the third time and seizes building materials in the Beduin village of Um Al Kher, South Hebron Hills

novembre 6, 2014 at 5:35 pm

On October 5 at 4 p.m. a convoy of Israeli forces, with a truck carrying a bulldozer, entered the Beduin village of Um Al Kher. Israeli soldiers, riot squad policemen and DCO officers proceeded to demolish the traditional oven that had already been demolished twice on the previous week and twice re-built by Palestinian inhabitants of the village together with the South Hebron Hills Popular Committee.

The bulldozer was meant to demolish two new tents that Palestinian inhabitants of the village and Israeli activists built on the previous Saturday in response to the five houses and the kitchen demolished on October 27. However, Palestinians had already dismantled the structures after the threats received on November 2 from DCO officers, as a consequence Israeli forces seized all the building materials needed for the new tents.

At 4:20 p.m., when the Israeli convoy was about to leave, three International volunteers were violently brought to Kiryat Arba police station and detained until late night, with the accuse of having being in a closed military area.

……….

Israeli Supreme Court Seeks Participation for Palestinians in Area C Planning

Israeli Supreme Court Seeks Participation for Palestinians in Area C Planning

ICAHD // Jerusalem, April 28th

The Supreme Court gave an interim decision today in response to an appeal brought by Rabbis For Human Rights, ICAHD, JLAC, St. Yves and the Palestinian village of Ad-Dirat-Al-Rfai’ya requesting that planning authority be returned to Palestinians living in Area C, the 62% of the West Bank under full Israeli control. The decision ordered the State to propose within ninety days institutionalized ways to facilitate participation of local Palestinians in Area C in the planning processes that affect their lives. Justices Rubinstein, Handel, and Solberg also expressed dissatisfaction with the current planning situation and rejected the state’s argument that participation of Palestinians exists in the current system and therefore the status quo ought to remain.

The judges also requested that the state provide explanations for the data provided by the petitioners indicating severe discrimination and a lack of adequate planning for Palestinians in Area C. The petitioners were given 30 days to comment after the state submits their proposal.

Response of ICAHD:

ICAHD normally does not initiate or join appeals to the Israeli Supreme Court regarding the situation in the Occupied Territory for the same reason it does not normally provide legal aid to Palestinians facing the demolition of their homes or help in obtaining building permits: such humanitarian assistance may help specific families in the short term (though rarely), but by legitimizing Israel’s authority to rule over the OPT in violation of international law, such interventions only perpetuate the Occupation.

Buon anno.
